Do you need council approval for a carport, verandah or pergola in SA? What is exempt, what needs planning and building consent, and what to lodge.

Yes, in most cases. In South Australia a carport or a roofed verandah almost always needs development approval, and so does a pergola with a solid roof. The main exception is an open pergola: no solid roof, open sides, no higher than 4 m and not in front of the house. The state regulations say that kind of pergola is not "development" at all, so no approval is needed. Some simple carports only need building consent rather than a full planning assessment, but you still need that consent before we start building.

Read the full guide

Only small garden sheds are exempt in SA: 15 m², 2.5 m high, 3 m span. What bigger sheds need, and how a shed and caravan carport combo is approved.

Only if it is small. In South Australia a detached shed needs no approval only when it has a floor area of 15 m² or less, a roof span of no more than 3 m, no part higher than 2.5 m and it sits behind the front of the house, along with a few other conditions. That covers a garden or tool shed. A garage, workshop, machinery shed or a shed and carport combination is bigger than that and needs development approval.

Read the full guide
